For those that know nothing about The Von Erich family this review is as spoiler free as it can be so take that as you may. 

When it comes to true stories that are tragic and gut punching the Von Erich family is one of the most emotional ones out there. Sean Durkin the writer and director of The Iron Claw tries his take on the story while delivering one of the most haunting yet respectful films based on a true story. Thanks to its brilliant cast and performances The Iron Claw tells a story of heartbreak, brotherhood and legacy that will stick with audiences long after the credits have rolled. 

In the world of wrestling The Von Erich family is a well know name from the likes of Fritz Von Erich played by Holt McCallany to the four brothers Kevin played by Zac Efron, Kerry played by Jeremy Allen White, David played by Harris Dickinson, and Mike played by Stanley Simmons. This film explores the tragic true story of the so called Von Erich family curse of the 80s and how this one family alone had to deal with so much trauma and travesty. For those who don’t know there were a total of 5 brothers as the youngest who was named Chris does not get mention in this story due to the runtime as he was cut out entirely. Thankfully the film still pays tribute to the family legacy thanks to beautiful cinematography of Mátyás Erdély as he utilizes the brother’s bond at their highest with a great montage to their absolute lowest. 

This film does not shy away at all when it comes to brutal reality of it all as it starts the ground off running right from the beginning all the way to the end. With the fantastic writing of Durkin he is able to show the cruel and controlling sides of Fritz as a father while also balancing the more human side of him that helps bring him back down to Earth. Holt McCallany does a fantastic job in the role of Fritz as he is in full control of the family due to his heavy influence he has of being the toughest family there is in order to achieve the dream he never could. With that we see early on in the film how important and vital the bond between the brothers is because of how tough Fritz can be at times. Each and every one of the brothers is easily likable. Kevin is the oldest so he is the one that is protective and keeps them together, David is a natural star when it comes to a stage presence, Kerry is the reliable one will do whatever he needs, and Mike is the odd one out who just wants to be an artist. Seeing how all 4 of them were so invested into each other’s lives is simple joyous which makes the inevitable ending hit as hard as it does. Zac Efron delivers his most powerful performance yet as he is able to play this highly physically demanding role while also capture the very hauntingly emotional aspects of the story. His love for his brothers is apparent from the very beginning and continues to show when he first meets Pam played by Lily James. The way Sean Durkin portrays Kevin is emotionally draining as if he is caught in some kind of never ending nightmare.  

By no means is The Iron Claw an easy watch as the bold decision makes all works out in the end. Durkins written and Efron’s performance blend perfectly in end as they show that healing is just around the corner and no matter how many scars they may have The Von Erich family will always persevere. With such a simple yet touching moment in the end The Iron Claw will have you leaving the theater with tears of joy.
